PROCEDURES (followed by ScienceBuddies):
1.
Stretch a round balloon several times to relax the material and make it easier to inflate.
2.
To measure your air capacity, inhale normally then exhale normally into the balloon. Do not force your breathing. Pinch the end, twist it, and measure the distance around the balloon. This measurement can be done either by wrapping the string around the widest part of the balloon then lining up the string with a ruler, or simply using a flexible, non-metallic tape measure to determine the circumference.
3.
What are your lungs’ vital capacity or complete amount of what your lungs can hold? Inhale as much air as you can and exhale forcefully into the balloon. Follow the same procedure of pinching, tying, and measuring.
Was there a big difference? Now do some exercising (things like push-up, jogging in place, jumping jacks) and see what happens to your lung’s vital capacity. Before you perform the experiment, be sure to make some predictions!
Enter your results below from your blowing up the balloon the first few times times. No need to take deep breaths yet.
*
Be sure to perform at least three more trials and take the average! Your parents/guardian can help you out.
Now, find the "total" amount of air your lungs can hold by taking a DEEP breath and blowing out as much air as you can.
*
Remember those other trials!
Describe the difference between the two trial types!
*
By now you're probably a balloon blowing expert! See what happens to you lung capacity after exercising and record your results!
*
Compare and contrast your results before and after exercising.
